The Heart Disease Data Portal, a collaboration between Kaiser Permanente Southern California (KPSC) and the RAND Corporation, is a web application designed to inform and support decisionmaking for public health by facilitating the exploration of hypertension prevalence rates in each of the 26 health districts in Los Angeles County.
The web application, developed by the RAND Corporation using R Shiny, Leaflet, and other open-source tools, allows users to explore data collected by KPSC on hypertension prevalence rates among different demographic groups (defined by age, gender, and race/ethnicity) between 2008 and 2019. Users can select a year and a demographic group to display the corresponding hypertension rates across Los Angeles County and can view an animation of changes over time. Users can also view the hypertension values associated with specific health districts and access time-series plots by health district. Code for the portal is available at https://github.com/RANDCorporation/KPSC-RAND-Heart-Disease-Data-Portal.
The Heart Disease Data Portal, funded by an innovation grant from the American Heart Association, provides a previously unavailable view of the hypertension health of communities in Los Angeles County and demonstrates how high-quality data, presented interactively, can illuminate public health needs.
