Israel-Hamas War: Insights from RAND
On October 7, 2023, Hamas launched a surprise assault on Israel, killing an estimated 1,200 people and taking nearly 200 more hostage. Israel responded with a sweeping offensive aimed at destroying Hamas.
Urban warfare in Gaza has been devastating; tens of thousands of Palestinians, including many civilians, have been killed. Although a U.S.-brokered ceasefire is now in place, the cessation of hostilities is fragile, and many questions remain about the prospects for achieving a durable peace.
What lessons does the past offer about ending the fighting for good? How can the humanitarian crisis be addressed? What must be done to bring long-term stability to the region? RAND experts have been offering timely insights on these questions and more. Additionally, RAND research provides important context for the conflict, the long-standing bloodshed between Israel and Hamas, and what might happen next.
