Examination of Warsaw Pact Airbase Attack Capability Against Unsheltered Aircraft in the Central Region of NATO

Published 1971
This simulation of a Warsaw Pact air campaign against NATO air bases explored the possibility that NATO allies would not build hardened aircraft shelters like those being constructed at U.S. Air Force bases. The analysis found that, without shelters at allied bases, as many as 1,000 NATO aircraft (out of an inventory of 1,444 aircraft) would be destroyed in the first three days. The results demonstrated the importance of NATO countries following through on aircraft shelter construction programs.
