ResearchPosted on rand.org Apr 27, 2017Published in: GOV.UK, Rail network, 21 April 2017

This study is concerned with quantifying how variables outside of the control of the rail industry, commonly referred to as external factors, impact on the demand for rail travel. Such factors include age, gender, employment type and car ownership. UK National Travel Survey data was used to quantify the impact of such factors on rail demand. This information was then used in conjunction with aggregate time series ticket data to develop a new rail forecasting methodology.
